My quiet walk was rudely interrupted this morning by a noisy flock of geese migrating north and flying about 150 feet overhead. They were flying in three ragged V formations and I think every single bird was honking or talking. It seemed like an awful lot of energy being expended on making noise. A little bit of research this morning shows that geese are probably the second most talkative creature, after people. They start as goslings, just out of the shell, and scientists believe that they've identified at least 13 different goose calls to communicate contentment, greetings, warnings, etc. I suspect that this group of geese was having an internal debate about which local pond or creek to stop in for a rest and a bit of breakfast...almost like a family on the interstate looking at the exit signs for info on the fast food choices on a vacation trip. Geese are committed to one another in their mating relationships, their raising of young, and as traveling and nesting communities. I was reminded that we people can be refreshed by this kind of example and this level of bonding. I think we already have the talking part down.
Psalm 104:12 The birds nest beside the streams
and sing among the branches of the trees.
