Subject: troubled heart needs belief
The sure hope of a heavenly home and having a focus on Jesus as the only way are two remedies for the 'troubled heart' that Jesus teaches about in John, chapter 14. We touched on those earlier this week. Woven through this is an essential concept centering on a word that is repeated several times: "believe". In the very first verse Jesus follows the instruction: "Let not your hearts be troubled"....with "Believe in God; believe also in me". In verse 8 Philip wants more than this. He asks Jesus to confirm all He has taught by revealing God the Father to them in some obvious physical way ("Lord, show us the Father, and it is enough for us"). So many people think that they will believe if they first can see God. Jesus responds to Philip that He, himself, has shown them all the Father from the beginning...but the only way to that knowledge is through belief (verse 10 "Do you not believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me?").

It seems that if we won't accept God based on His word He won't reveal any more of Himself to us. But when we do believe in the reality of God and that He was fully represented and presented through the life of His Son we find more than an antidote to a troubled heart! In verses 12-14 Jesus makes these amazing promises: "...whoever believes in me will also do the works that I do; and greater works than these will he do..." and "If you ask anything in my name, I will do it".

Belief leads to divine purpose and promise. And what greater resource can a troubled heart find?
