Romans 6:3 Do you not know that all of us who have been baptized into Christ Jesus were baptized into his death? 4 We were buried therefore with him by baptism into death, in order that, just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, we too might walk in newness of life.

"Born again" is a phrase that has become familiar to the broader culture. It even has been used in secular music and marketing. This doesn't diminish its Biblical origin or meaning. The new birth (think of the word 'renaissance'...when an entire civilization was awakened from a form of death) is as real and defined as death, while much more positive and hopeful.
-
For, to be 'born again' through actually placing personal trust in the work of Jesus upon the cross means that we must also first die and our 'old self' be buried (pictured by baptism).
-
Perhaps another way of finding out if one has become a Christian...been saved...is to find out if they have been through death yet. The second birth requires the first death.

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."
