John 5:18"This was why the Jews were seeking all the more to kill him, because not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God."

Jesus had just healed a man who had been lame for 38 years (recorded in John, chapter 5). Sounds like headline news of a positive nature! But the religious leaders had added to God's laws and decided that it was wrong to heal on the Sabbath. They had twisted God's law to become their means of control. Somehow things had become so twisted that (a) a miraculous healing was construed as a serious breach of the law and (b) the Messiah, who had been foretold through God's prophets for a few thousand years, was not recognized.

It is one thing to never have heard of God and His love. It is another to have heard and to harden our hearts to the point where we use His name and His words for our own purposes. Like the religious leaders of Jesus' time, we should be on guard to ensure that we do not put ourselves in the position where we end up judging God. He sent His Son to heal and to deliver those who would believe from the true judgment.

John 5: 24 Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life.
