Mark 15:37 And Jesus uttered a loud cry and breathed his last. 38 And the curtain of the temple was torn in two, from top to bottom. 39 And when the centurion, who stood facing him, saw that in this way he breathed his last, he said, "Truly this man was the Son of God!"

In reading through the account of Jesus' trial before Pilate and His suffering and crucifixion I was struck by the vignette above. It occurred to me that the word 'breath' is the same as the word for 'spirit' in scripture. As Jesus 'breathed his last' and the curtain of the temple was torn in two...the Roman centurion at the foot of the Cross breathed his 'first' spiritual breath as he came to faith. This pictures how Jesus' death opens the way for all to live. The curtain that separated people from the Holiest place in the temple was also torn. Now all may enter.
