Romans 13:9.."You shall love your neighbor as yourself." 10 Love does no harm to a neighbor; therefore love is the fulfillment of the law.

It occurred to me recently that "the golden rule", which is cited in the reference above from the book of Romans, can be applied by seeing ourselves in others. That is, with each conversation and interaction we have with other people...no matter how brief, how casual, or temporary...we can recognize a common bond. We are all of absolutely equal worth and we are all members of the same family, really. When we see ourselves in the other person we like what we see. We share the same struggles, challenges and celebrate the same joys. We have the same basic needs and we truly are in this thing called life together. As we see ourselves in the other person, we want to empathize and help them.
-
Life doesn't naturally cultivate this mindset. We may tend to compete and compare rather than to have compassion.
-
Perhaps, with a New Year, we can have a new attitude to others and see ourselves in each one...one at a time!
