I was out for a stroll in Colonial Williamsburg with my grandson, Peter, last night and this root caught our attention. It seemed both ugly and beautiful at the same time. I found a short passage in scripture that spoke of the coming Messiah (Jesus) who would combine the features of a root coming out of dry ground that was unattractive physically and despised by many, but who 'bore our griefs and carried our sorrows' and who suffered in our place, with wounds that healed the breach with our Father. The root we saw anchored a mighty tree and has provided nourishment from the ground for many years. Jesus is the root who anchors us surely in Heaven and provides life eternal.
Isaiah 53:2-5
For he grew up before him like a young plant,
and like a root out of dry ground;
he had no form or majesty that we should look at him,
and no beauty that we should desire him.
3 He was despised and rejected by men,
a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief;
and as one from whom men hide their faces
he was despised, and we esteemed him not.
4 Surely he has borne our griefs
and carried our sorrows;
yet we esteemed him stricken,
smitten by God, and afflicted.
5 But he was pierced for our transgressions;
he was crushed for our iniquities;
upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace,
and with his wounds we are healed.

"Death is inevitable. Life is a choice!"
John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."
