Philippians 2:12 "Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, so now, not only as in my presence but much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling, 13 for it is God who works in you, both to will and to work for his good pleasure."

Fitness is currently very popular across age groups. Whether it involves running long distances, whole body training in gyms, swimming, weightlifting, or interesting activities like martial arts. And that certainly is a good thing. Many of us spend hours in front of computer screens and 'working out' is healthy for the mind as well as the body!

For the follower of Christ the most important exercise is described in Philippians, chapter 2. We actually partner with God in this workout. After trusting in Christ with the full weight of our heart and being saved, we find ourselves still in this life and in these bodies and with much daily living before us. So Paul exhorts us to have a mindset very much like the disciplined mindset of athletes and fitness devotees. We need to "work out" our salvation as God "works in" us. We need the humble attitude of "fear and trembling" as we realize that the One who is doing the greatest exercise is God, Himself.
-
As we bow before and submit ourselves to His way and His word, He is molding us into spiritual shape so that ultimately our lives will give Him "good pleasure".
-
Perhaps the greatest exercise is the continual submission of our hearts to His!
