Mark 10:2 And Pharisees came up and in order to test him asked, "Is it lawful for a man to divorce his wife?"
-
Mark 10:17 And as he was setting out on his journey, a man ran up and knelt before him and asked him, "Good Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?"
-
Mark 10:26 And they were exceedingly astonished, and said to him, "Then who can be saved?"
-
As I was listening to the book of Mark during a walk last week I was impressed that chapter 10 showed different kinds of questions people would ask Jesus when He was here. Some asked Him questions to 'trip Him up', hoping He would say something that would lead to His arrest.
-
A wealthy young man, who was used to seeing success come from his actions, inquired to find out what He had to do to earn eternal life. When Jesus told him that he was framing life incorrectly...thinking it was based on his effort, and rewarded with gains...as he had accumulated material wealth, rather than a dedicated trust in Him...it shattered his world view. And the disciples the questioned who could be saved. For them the lesson was that man cannot save himself because man is the problem...only God can save.
-
Mark 10:35 "And James and John, the sons of Zebedee, came up to him and said to him, "Teacher, we want you to do for us whatever we ask of you." So some of the disciples starting to think that Jesus was to serve them and honor even self-centered requests.
-
But at the end of the chapter we see Jesus ask a question after a blind man cried out persistently in faith for Jesus to heal him: Mark 10:51 And Jesus said to him, "What do you want me to do for you?" And the blind man said to him, "Rabbi, let me recover my sight." 52 And Jesus said to him, "Go your way; your faith has made you well."
-
What questions do you have for Jesus? What is the motive behind your questions? Do you seek to trip Him up, to use Him to complete your life, on your own terms? Or do you cry out for help, realizing that you also are blind and need His touch?
-
Or, if you have no questions for Jesus...why is that?
