Luke 22:19-20 And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, "This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me." Likewise He also took the cup after supper, saying, "This cup is the new covenant in My blood, which is shed for you. "For you" his body was given. "For you" his blood was shed. Our Lord told us to remember Him this way. The thought occurred to me this morning that we generally use the cross as a symbol to remember Him. Of course we cannot minimize the importance the cross played as the greatest stage for the greatest act of the greatest being ever to live. Nevertheless, our Lord did not say to use the cross as the primary symbol to remember Him. He said to remember the gift of His life via the simple elements of bread and wine...signifying His body and blood. But I think the part that sometimes needs more emphasis is to also remember that this body and this blood were given "for you" and for me. Truly this personalizes our memory and links us directly to Him. blessings, Rob Smith |
