The one necessary thing

Luke 10:38 Now as they went on their way, Jesus entered a village. And a woman named Martha welcomed him into her house. 39 And she had a sister called Mary, who sat at the Lord's feet and listened to his teaching. 40 But Martha was distracted with much serving. And she went up to him and said, "Lord, do you not care that my sister has left me to serve alone? Tell her then to help me." 41 But the Lord answered her, "Martha, Martha, you are anxious and troubled about many things, 42 but one thing is necessary. Mary has chosen the good portion, which will not be taken away from her."
-
How many things compete for our attention?  Even when we are sequestered in our homes, and our options are seemingly limited, we have limitless things to think about...to direct our attention towards.  But of all the things we can focus on, what is the one thing that is necessary?  We learn from this story about two sisters that the one necessary thing is to sit at the feet of Jesus and listen to Him teach.
-
And we can still do that.  He speaks today from God's Word and the Holy Spirit gives us understanding.  When we do this we accomplish two important things: (1) we grow in knowledge and wisdom for personal application and (2) we build a closer bond with our Savior and cultivate an ear for His voice.
-
So, why don't we start our day with the 'one necessary thing' and why don't we turn to it when we have the opportunity?  That 'one necessary thing' will lead to many necessary actions and attitudes that will bring the Lord's light and love to others and satisfy our own with peace and purpose.

"Death is inevitable.  Life is a choice!"

John 11:25
Jesus said to her, "I am the resurrection and the life. Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live."
