stalks and fields

Fields of corn are a symbol of summer.  Today I walked through a field of maturing corn stalks (picture) and thought about the fact that the individual stalks don't get as much attention as the entire field, or crop.  Yet, the ears of corn don't come from a "field", they grow on individual stalks.  If you look close at each stalk you begin to see differences, despite the soldier-like similarity and rigid stance of the entire crop.  Perhaps we may lose ourselves at times, like stalks of corn in the sea-like crop of people.  But the fruit of our lives comes from each individual life as we stand side by side with others.  (By the way, did you know that the average American consumes about his or her weight each year in corn and corn products?).

Genesis 41:22 "Then I fell asleep again, and I had another dream. This time I saw seven heads of grain, full and beautiful, growing on a single stalk.
