The Boy Scout motto has been "Be Prepared!" Don't go hiking or camping without matches in a waterproof bag or without insect repellent...take some water purifying tablets...

Jesus sent his disciples out and they'd been prepared in a different way. He told them to take very little (just a staff to ward off stray animals or to help walking the rocky hills). But they were fully prepared. They'd experienced the faith awakening that happened when Jesus healed and restored to life and when He showed that He knew each of them intimately well. So they carried nothing materially and everything spiritually.

By stripping away the physical they were totally dependent on the Lord for everything. As their needs were met by His providence they knew He could meet the greatest needs of all they would meet. And so they were freed from concerns for self to become vehicles of blessing through which Jesus moved.

And they were encouraged all the more!

Mark 6:12 So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. 13 And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
