Mark 7:
7 in vain do they worship me,
teaching as doctrines the commandments of men.'
8 You leave the commandment of God and hold to the tradition of men."
The Pharisees gave Jesus a hard time because His disciples weren't washing their hands before eating and this broke one of their rules. They had a tradition, a rule, that said a person was unclean spiritually if his hands were unclean physically. And they came down on Jews who didn't follow this rule. Jesus called them out on this, saying that they were making their own rules and not following God's instructions. The Pharisees came up with their own rules so they could cleverly avoid God's commandments and put themselves in the place of judge.

We need to be careful to return to God's Word for our only source of instruction. The traditions of men can be presented as the commands of God and that will only divert us down the wrong path...the path that places us under the wrong authority or places us wrongly in authority over others.
