Mark 4:37 And a great windstorm arose, and the waves were breaking into the boat, so that the boat was already filling. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion. And they woke him and said to him, "Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?" 39 And he awoke and rebuked the wind and said to the sea, "Peace! Be still!" And the wind ceased, and there was a great calm. 40 He said to them, "Why are you so afraid? Have you still no faith?" 41 And they were filled with great fear and said to one another, "Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?"

Storms are part of our reality. On a visit to South Carolina last week we saw homes and a church that were standing in flood waters from Hurricane Florence. Today we hear of another hurricane approaching Florida. Devastating winds and rain...nature can be changed from the calm of a morning like we have today to a raging beast. Storms come to our internal lives too. Job loss, serious illness, fractured relationships. The calm of our everyday lives can also change in fearful ways. It can appear that our world is turned upside down and that there is no path to peace. It is so good to know, with absolute assurance, that even storms must bow before God. They cannot come without His permission, and they cannot remain without His purpose. And we can ask Him to quiet the storm, knowing that He absolutely can. And He is with us in and through the midst of every storm.
