The sun

Psalm 136:8
the sun to rule over the day,
    for his steadfast love endures forever;
-
The sun is a physical entity with a fixed life.
-
We take the sun for granted because we can't begin to picture existence without it.  Here are some interesting facts about the sun:
It has used about half of its energy (like a big battery)...and you can't plug it in for a recharge
It is moving about 475,000 miles per hour, racing through space and circling the Milky Way.
It takes about 8 minutes for sunlight to reach us.
You could fit a million earths inside the sun.
-
In some ways the sun is a strong reminder of the Lord:
It provides light so we can see
It provides a weather system with the atmosphere that nourishes the earth and supports all living things.
It rises daily...to faithfully watch over us, and with its companion, the moon, provides continual coverage.
Its powerful gravitational force holds the earth in the perfect place to sustain life and not spin out of control.
-
The sun is the biggest and most necessary physical contributor to our lives.  But it pales in comparison to its Creator.
And He does rule over the sun.  Consider these verses:
Joel 2:31 The sun shall be turned to darkness, and the moon to blood, before the great and awesome day of the Lord comes.
Mark 13:24 "But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light"
-
Consider this from the prophet Isaiah, chapter 60:
19 The sun shall be no more
    your light by day,
nor for brightness shall the moon
    give you light;
but the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your God will be your glory.
20 Your sun shall no more go down,
    nor your moon withdraw itself;
for the Lord will be your everlasting light,
    and your days of mourning shall be ended.
-
As amazing as the sun is, we must recognize the maker of the sun as far greater.  And as powerful as the sun is, we must recognize that there is a source of light that is greater.  We must move from sun to son to bask in that light which will never be extinguished.
